LEDR Point-to-Point Radios Expand Telemar's Network in Brazil

GE MDS supplied LEDR Point to Point radios for installation in the network of the Brazilian telephone company Telemar. The order, worth approximately $14 million, was delivered over the course of several months, with additional LEDR radios added to the order after further system tests by Infranav.

The Brazilian system consists of point-to-point radio links that carry voice and data traffic as part of the country's rapidly expanding telephone system. These links operate in the 400 and 1400 MHz bands, using LEDR Series digital radios. Wireless technology was chosen over hard-wired alternatives because of its reduced installation cost, rapid deployment, and high reliability.

GE MDS was selected following rigorous testing of four manufacturers. The tests were conducted under actual operating conditions and across challenging radio terrain. The 400 MHz band was used during the tests to achieve a "worst case" scenario for ignition noise and other forms of potential interference. In all of the tests, the GE MDS equipment achieved the highest performance and reliability ratings among participants. Reliability was cited as a key consideration due to difficult site access at many locations.
