Wireless Network Security

As networks become a mix of public, private, industrial and office, wired and wireless infrastructure, the issue of security becomes critical. Networks need multiple levels of security in place, such as a standard security plan, firewalls, and virtual private networks (VPN) for example. All networks offer the opportunity for data interception and insertion. It is impossible to achieve and guarantee absolute security in a wired or wireless network, however GE MDS provides layers of security to mitigate those risks. Assuming the necessary steps have been taken to secure a network on an enterprise level, the next concern is incorporating GE MDS wireless technology that enhances that security.

GE MDS wireless solutions are used in multiple-service IP networks and dedicated-service serial networks.

GE MDS solutions prevent:
  • Accessing of data transmission using wireless packet sniffers
  • Interception and insertion of wireless information
  • Unauthorized/unauthenticated devices from joining the wireless network
  • Denial of Service (DoS) attacks
  • MAC IP spoofing
  • Network Topology Discovery

In the past, control and data acquisition systems resided on a physically separate, stand-alone network. This resulted in an inherently secure SCADA network, making it unlikely that an unauthorized person would be successful in gaining access to the network through a serial channel. However, today's demands for enterprise-wide access to data has created a merger of corporate and control networks raising the bar on network security.
